August 2010

Bobby Mace – LGBTQ Affairs Intern

This summer, I joined the Women’s Outreach Center and Student Affairs as the new LGBTQ Affairs Intern. To get ready for the upcoming year, I attended the Campus Pride leadership camp at Vanderbilt in Nashville. It was an amazing experience with students from all across America coming together to learn how to enact change on their college campuses. We networked, made action plans, and really grew together as LGBTQ leaders.

We have several great new student leaders on our new LGBTQ Advisory Board: Madeline Ambrose, Whitney Patterson, Duke Lambert, Haley Brown, Ashley Weston, Mandy Hardin, and Brenton Wimmer. We just had our planning retreat, and we have some wonderful plans for programming and campus improvement! If you’re interested in volunteering, let us know; we always need you!

To go with our Sooner Ally program, we’re having new brown bag lunches throughout the year. Several people have expressed interest in more in-depth training sessions. To keep training lengths short, we are offering these one-hour sessions supplementary to the primary training. Be sure to stop by the Women’s Outreach Center to see us or just email lgbtq@ou.edu to sign up!

August-Sept-Newsletter2010

By: Quinn Cooper, WOC General Intern

Today is Women’s Equality Day!  Women’s Equality Day was designated by the U.S. Congress in 1971 to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment.  Women’s Equality day also brings light to the continuing efforts of women towards full equality.

At the WOC, we’ll be celebrating Women’s Equality Day by sponsoring a voter registration table on the South Oval.  If you’re not registered, come by and get registered any time between 11AM and 2PM.  If you are registered outside of Cleveland County and are wondering how to get an absentee ballot, we’ll have information on that as well.  We’ll also have candy and buttons, so come celebrate Women’s Equality Day with us by making sure you have everything you need in order to exercise your 19th Amendment rights this November!

It is very important that women vote in all elections.  Many political issues affect women in a way that they don’t affect men.  If women fail to vote, the needs of women regarding these issues (fair pay, reproductive rights and health care to name a few) will not be acknowledged.  To make sure that all women are properly represented in the government, all women need to vote. Local issues can impact your daily life just as much, if not more, than a national election.  So make sure you’re registered to vote this fall as Oklahoma will elect it’s first female governor, many seats in the state legislature are either open or being contested and many seats in the United States Congress will be decided by the November elections.

Hello everyone! Welcome to the OU Women’s Outreach Center’s blog.

The Women’s Outreach Center (WOC) is a part of Student Life at OU that focuses on issues that disproportionately affect women on our campus. Whether we’re doing sexual assault peer education with students, teaching others how to benchmark their salaries, handing out condoms on Valentine’s Day, or hosting a fundraiser for local charities, the WOC strives to share new perspectives on issues that historically and currently affect women. We encourage you to check out our website, www.ou.edu/womensoc for more detail about the programs and services we offer to the OU student population.

We have awesome interns who will be blogging for us this fall and will talk about their specific program areas and issues. Look forward to videos from our campus where students talk about issues important to them and what they think about WOC programming. Please check our Facebook and Twitter as well for updates and information.

At this time, we are a “no comments” blog space. This blog is maintained by the staff at the WOC and we can answer any questions or concerns you may have at woc@ou.edu (be sure to include the word “blog” in your subject line).

Thanks for visiting and stay tuned throughout the semester to see what we have planned!
